What are mutual insurance companies?

 

Mutual insurance companies that collaborate with the Spanish Social Security system are non-profit private associations of business owners which are duly authorized by the Spanish Ministry of Employment and Social Security and registered with the Special Register operated by said ministry. Their aim is to collaborate with the management of the Spanish Social Security system under its direction and auspices with members jointly assuming liability for the situations and with the scope established by the law.

Collaborating friendly societies with the Social Security acquire legal personality once they are constituted and, therefore, have the capacity for the fulfilment of their aims.

The entrepreneur freely chooses to join the friendly society that best meets their needs and those of the workers on their workforce, both in terms of quality of service and of proximity.

The activities of collaborating friendly societies with the Social Security are focused on:

• Management of the financial and healthcare provisions, including rehabilitation, included in the protection for the work accident and occupational illness risks of the Social security. They also work in activities for the prevention of these risks.
• Management of the financial provision for temporary disability arising from common illness and non-work-related accident.
• Management of provisions for risk during pregnancy and risk during natural breastfeeding.
•  Management of the financial provisions due to cease of trading of self-employed workers.
• Management of the care provision for minors affected by cancer or other serious illness.
• The other activities of the Social Security that are legally attributed to them.

In Spain, there are a total of 20 collaborating friendly societies with the Social Security throughout the whole of the country. They are all members of Amat, the Association of Work Accident and Occupational Illness Friendly Societies of the Social Security.

Founded in 1986, this body carries out “the coordination, representation, guidance, management, promotion and defence of the general and common interests of friendly societies”. Its main activities are their institutional representation and organising general activities, most notably those related to the promotion of work risk prevention.
